05 July 2010 - £2 Million Youth Boost From Co-operative Foundation

Seven UK cities have been awarded funding from the Co-operative Foundation to challenge negative stereotypes of young people.

One charity in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, London, Newcastle and Manchester has each received £280,000 after they were invited to pitch their projects to an awards panel consisting of Co-operative Foundation trustees.

Each charity will now begin a two-year programme to change the negative or inaccurate perceptions of young people prevalent in society.

One of the chosen programmes is the Truth About Youth programme, which supports young people and forms the basis of the Co-operative’s Community Plan.

Co-operative Group’s head of community and campaigns, Mike Fairclough, said:

“Truth About Youth is about helping young people deal with the challenges of growing up in a culture that has widespread negative perceptions of youth.

“We hope that by working with our seven charity partners and supporting projects which enable young people to work with adults, the media and the wider community, we will be able to make a real difference.”
