27 July 2010 - Nottingham City Council Reviews Voluntary Funding Programme

The work of 100 Nottingham voluntary groups supported by the council is to be assessed under a general spending review.

Council officials have been asked to initiate cutbacks in services and say they are reviewing the work of local voluntary organisations in receipt of funding to assess how much of an impact they have on people’s lives.

The council claims it is necessary to find out what social care services are not currently available and compare this with what the local voluntary sector provides.

Councillor Eunice Campbell said the assessment was “the first phase of a large piece of work.”

“We are particularly keen to understand the outcomes or the changes that have been made to people’s lives by the service provided.”

But local voluntary groups are concerned cuts are inevitable as a result of the review.

Chief executive of the Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service Helen Voce said:

“In the short term there is a bit of a panic and expenditure is being cut back significantly.

“Many groups will go to the wall and we will have to build them back up again. I am really concerned about protecting that local delivery where people come together to help their neighbours.”
